I've been doing a lot of introspective searching on how I'm spending my time, and decided to make a few challenging but necessary choices. Aside from culling the number of blogs I"m involved with (those who know, say that over eight is too many... so I guess I have too many)! As such, I've decided to keep the SL JAM, but its focus will be changed a bit... less on SL Jazz clubs, and more on the Jazz era genre. What does that mean?, well....

1) I'll be spending more item with SL sims, events, and other things related to the Dieselpunk era - in other words, from the 1920's to the late 1940's. There is plenty to see in SL regarding this, and though not as popular as other genres (atm, anyways), I'd like to bring them to the forefront.

2) I will focus less on the general SL Jazz scene, and more on venues that promote the "classic" Jazz era (again, the Jazz music from the 1920s to the 1940's). There aren't as many, but most that exist in SL are quite good, and worth a visit.

3) I'll be adding more about my home sim of Searph City. Its been dormant for ages now, and perhaps a bit of attention will help it move ever-so-slightly from its slumber. Hence, the blog will be re-worked towards this goal.

Over the next few months, I'll be adding more (as expected), but there will be some big announcements regarding a few things. As such, make it a point of considering the SL JAM your SL Jazz and Dieselpunk him, and Abyssinia!

Too many clubs simply add the term "Jazz", and when one arrives at the club, you'll hear a selection of Blues (which is good, but it isn't Jazz), or rock, or even heavy metal. I do understand the difficulties in drawing traffic to a venue, but if I'm looking for a Jazz club, at the very minimum, I'd like to hear some Jazz.

Dieselpunk Travelogue: Reasonable Desires, and Afterhours at the Fitzgerald

After doing a bit of searching in-world, I've been able to slowly rebuild a collection of Dieselpunk locales which have emerged over the past year. One notable destination I came across ages ago was a very nice Jazz venue named "Afterhours at the Fitzgerald". Being ever curious, I decided to locate it... and was surprised at what I discovered!

Not only was it still surviving (as the SL Jazz business is a bit draconian), but it flourished! Located on a new sim called "Reasonable Desires", it is actually part of a Dieselpunk venue whose main endeavor is named Reasonable Desire (as pictured above).

As part of the Dieselpunk genre, located in the main store, is a Cabaret corner, selling all the items necessary to show off one of the major entertainments of the era. Nice selection, and the prices are reasonable (as far as I can tell for ladies' attire).

The central area has a number of vendors, which surround the Reasonable Desires sphere! Easy to locate, and is often popular with the row of "lucky chairs" in front of the main store. Each store has a topic (e.g. animations, clothes, etc), but my attention was caught by the newspaper stand just off to the right of the photo!

Throughout the sim, there are numerous small era details and imagery, such as the "painted" advertisements above, set in a genre look. Very well done - but one word of warning... the area has a bit of a grey tone overall, so it might be best advised to take your photos in a dark setting - the colors seem a bit washed out in a daytime setting.

The key entertainment venue of Reasonable Desires its club, the "Afterhours at the Fitzgerald". I remember when it was a small venue on a single sim, but its emerged into one of the better genre clubs in SL. The exterior is one of the best 1930's looking that I've seen to date!

It plays a "Martini in the Morning" feed, but also has RL guest singers as well. I was very impressed with the few I've had a chance to listen to, so be on the lookout for them. Also, there is a very nice attached lounge and coffee shop (complete with poetry readings), so if you are simply seeking a place to relax, that might be the key!

Dieselpunk Music - Electro Swing, by Buddah

Dieselpunk music is perhaps more varied than one might think. Drawing upon the "classics", such as swing standards and other types of musical selections from the era, Dieselpunk music is still what might be called "developing" - its not a definite style, as of yet. However, there are plenty of variations, such as this take on take on The Benny Goodman Orchestra's "Sing, Sing, Sing", by Buddah - there are plenty of new variations and exceptionally talented bands making themselves known, so you never know what you might find with a bit of luck!

One of the great developments of the Dieselpunk era is the outstanding poster art - always an easy sight to enjoy and inspire. There are a handful of modern artists who have the talent and vision to emulate the style of the era - one of my favorites is a superb gentleman named Mr. Lipatov.

Mr. Lipatov is a bit of an enigma, as the extent of the information I was able to divine is from his location on Deviant art. However, his outstanding work is amazing to behold. He has a knack for melding genre vehicles (e.g. trains, airships, hovercars), with lovely ladies (including a few risque works on his Deviant art page)...

Jazz Venue Review: Jazz Music - Music World

Hello again! Well, back after a bit of a trying week (the wonderful work/school combination), and a bit of introspection (yet again) on the SL JAM. I have been hoping to highlight numerous clubs in SL, but unforgivably, I've become a bit wordy over time. So, in hopes to "cover more ground", I'll be cutting down the review for most clubs I visit. Realistically, there are only some basics that visitors want, and I'll hope to address them, while trying to highlight the good clubs (and warn about the not-so-good clubs in SL).

The reviews will be shorter... and ideally more frequent. I'll still keep on with the "Big Jazz" artilcles once or twice a month. They'll be a bit longer... after all, the idea is to eyes the larger Jazz clubs in SL. Still, there are really some simple questions (I postulate) people have about a SL Jazz venue, such as:

1) What's the joint like? Is it a busy lag fest, or is it a quiet and secluded location?
2) Do they mostly play Jazz, or is the term used as a key word search?
3) If they do play Jazz, what kind of Jazz?
4) Do they have live performers?
5) Where is it at?
6) (Finally) - what do you think of the place?

As a segue, I'm starting the new reviews with Jazz World - which is ironically the same build as my own Empire Jazz Club (by the lovely Miss Blue Jishnu). This is the full sized version of the club, with a few tweaks (including the giant sax just outside)! It has a smooth Jazz feed, but I didn't see any live performance offerings at Jazz Music - Music World. Not a bad location, though I'm a bit biased toward my (almost identical club)! The foundation of what might be called the "sound track" of the Dieselpunk genre is Jazz music, the most pervasive and best known genre of music of the 1920s through the late 1940s and early 1950s. Having its roots in the New Orleans music scene, the Jazz genre began to emerge after World War I, and with the help of new technology (radio), became known throughout the United States. 1920's

Hot Jazz
Circa 1925, Louis Armstrong recorded his first Hot Five records - the first time he recorded under his own name. The records made by Louis Armstrong's Hot Five and Hot Seven are considered to be absolute Jazz classics and speak of Armstrong's creative powers. The band never played live, but continued recording until 1928.
The music was characterized by collective improvised solos, around melodic structure, that ideally built up to an emotional and "hot" climax. The rhythm section, usually drums, bass, banjo or guitar supported this crescendo, many times in the style of march tempo. Soon, larger bands and orchestras began to emulate that energy, especially with the advance of record technology, that spread the "hot" new sound across the country.

Chicago Style Jazz
Chicago was the breeding ground for many young, inventive players. Characterized by harmonic, inovative arrangements and a high technical ability of the players, Chicago Style Jazz significantly furthered the improvised music of it's day.
Contributions from dynamic players like Benny Goodman, Bud Freeman and Eddie Condon along with the creative grooves of Gene Krupa, helped to pioneer Jazz music from it's infancy and inspire those who followed.

The King of Swing, by *yankeedog

Swing
The 1930s belonged to Swing. During that classic era, most of the Jazz groups were Big Bands. Derived from New Orleans Jazz, Swing was robust and invigorating. Swing was also dance music, which served as it's immediate connection to the people.
Although it was a collective sound, Swing also offered individual musicians a chance to improvise melodic, thematic solos which could at times be very complex.
The mid 1990's saw a revival of Swing music fueled by the retro trends in dance. Once again young couples across America and Europe jitter-bugged to the swing'n sounds of Big Band music, often played by much smaller ensembles.

Kansas City Style Jazz
During the Depression and Prohibition eras, the Kansas City Jazz scene thrived as a mecca for the modern sounds of late 1920s and 30s. Characterized by soulful and blusey stylings of Big Band and small ensemble Swing, arrangements often showcased highly energetic solos played to "speakeasy" audiences.

Gypsy Jazz
Originated by French guitarist Django Reinhardt, Gypsy Jazz is an unlikely mix of 1930s American swing, French dance hall "musette" and the folk strains of Eastern Europe. Also known as Jazz Manouche, it has a languid, seductive feel characterized by quirky cadences and driving rhythms.

The main instruments are nylon stringed guitars, often amounting to a half-dozen ensemble, with occasional violins and bass violin. Solos pass from one player to another as the other guitars assume the rhythm. While primarily a nostalgic style set in European bars and small venues, Gypsy Jazz is appreciated world wide.

Bebop
Bebop (or Bop) was developed in the early 1940's and had established itself as vogue by 1945. It's main innovators were alto saxophonist Charlie Parker and trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie.

Until then, Jazz improvisation was derived from the melodic line. Bop soloists engaged in chordal improvisation, often avoiding the melody altogether after the first chorus. Usually under seven pieces, the soloist was free to explore improvised possibilities as long as they fit into the chord structure

Differing greatly from Swing, Bop divorced itself early-on from dance music, establishing itself as art form but severing its potential commercial value. Ironically, what was once thought of as a radical style, Bebop has become the basis for all the innovations that followed.

1950's

Cool Jazz
Cool Jazz evolved directly from Bop in the late 1940's and 1950's. A smoothed out mixture of Bop and Swing, tones were again harmonic and dynamics were now softened. The ensemble arrangement had regained importance.
Nicknamed "West Coast Jazz" because of the many innovations coming from Los Angeles, Cool became nation wide by the end of the 1950's, with significant contributions from East Coast musicians and composers.

Mainstream
After the end of the Big Band era, as these large ensembles broke into smaller groups, Swing music continued to be played. Some of Swing's finest players could be heard at their best in jam sessions of the 1950s where chordal improvisation now would take significance over melodic embellishment.
Re-emerging as a loose style in the late '70s and '80s, Mainstream Jazz picked up influences from Cool, Classic and Hardbop. The terms Modern Mainstream or Post Bop are used for almost any style that cannot be closely associated with historical types of Jazz music.

Hard Bop
Hard Bop (1955-70) is an extension of Bebop that was somewhat interrupted by the Cool sounds of West Coast Jazz. The melodies tend to be more "soulful" than Bebop, borrowing at times from Rhythm & Blues and even Gospel themes. The rhythm section is sophisticated and more diverse than the Bop of the 1940's. Pianist Horace Silver is known for his Hard Bop innovations.

By the mid 1960's, Hard Bop had split into Post Bop, Modal Jazz and Soul Jazz. Hard Bop emerged as a major influence again in the early 1990's.

A lot of the aforementioned list seems a bit technical, but most people actually recognize more versions than they realize. From Louis Armstrong's Hot Jazz of the Roaring 1920s, the Swing tunes of the Depression and World War II era, or the Cool Jazz found in many Film Noir productions, Jazz permeates the Dieselpunk genre. With the advent of Electro-swing, new life has been infused into the classics of the era, but one can always hear a bit of the past in the new works! Sadly, one of the greatest voices of Jazz passed away today, one of America's greatest chanteuses, passed away from renal failure today, at an ever young 73. Fortunately, she gravitated towards Jazz in her later years, and left an indelible mark on the Jazz genre. As with all legendary voices, hers will be missed - RIP.

Big Jazz in SL: Foxxies Jazz

Ages ago, when the SL JAM was "young", I envisioned writing a series on the larger Jazz clubs in Second Life. Alas, due to circumstances, I never approached this goal, focusing on smaller venues which caught my eye. So, turning over a new leaf this year, I'll work towards that goal, ideally reviewing at least ten major Jazz establishments in Second Life, in a series I call "Big Jazz". I will start out with the first entry, which turns out to be quite easy - reviewing Foxxies Jazz Club!

Foxxies is, in my opinion, one of the top venues to enjoy Jazz music in Second Life. The arrival point (for TPs) is an excellent introduction to the club. It may look a bit busy at first, but it has information stands in four languages, a balloon ride and a horse & carriage a quick jaunt, and two sets of formal attire (one for gentlemen, another for ladies), for those who may not have dressed up for the visit.

The interior is very spacious - as one can see from the still shot just above. The dance mechanisms are easily located, plenty of space, and for a major Jazz venue, Foxxies has *plenty* of space, to indulge in a bit of dancing with your partner.

Sigh - Breezy is taking *forever* in the powder room!

The lag issue is a perennial concern of mine - though I realize that most major venues are helpless to effectively address it. Foxxies, on the other hand, had essentially no lag, the three times I visited it for the review.

Enjoying the space to dance at Foxxies

There is a very large shopping area with fifteen (15), located right below the the main dance floor - a very clever design, as it saves space, but consolidates the merchants in an easy to visit area. Plenty of well-known vendors (not overly familiar with lady's attire and designers, so I'm taking Breezy's word)! There are also "specials" available only at Foxxies for the ladies (a small stand to the right, off the main vendor sign, so gents can send their special lady a gift)!

The live entertainers in "full swing"! (oh, ok, bad pun)

The music feed is a smooth Jazz stream (Smooth Jazz 24/7), but they also have live talent perform musical selections. When I visited, there was a live female Jazz chanteuse, who was taking requests for Jazz standards... and was exceptionally good! (I've endured too many "singers" who need the proverbial "bucket" for their "talent").

One additional note - the grounds surrounding Foxxies Jazz are replete with benches, waterfalls, relaxing seating areas... and plenty of Intan dance machines, so if you choose to avoid the main dance area, or just want to listen to some smooth Jazz in world, again, plenty of space available to do so!

So, the basics about Foxxies...
Music - A streamed Jazz feed, with a selection of live performers
Style - Mostly Art Deco, with some touches of Moderne thrown in, but well built (no random seams or bad texturing), and well decorated - the interiors are well coordinated and look excellent (mesh well with the Art Deco theme)
Traffic - Medium to Heavy... leaning on the medium side, but for the eleventh most visited Jazz club in Second Life, its amazingly lag free, which makes for an enjoyable experience.
Bottom Line - An emphatic "Yes"! SL Art Deco Builders: Rashka's Repository

Finding a builder in Second Life who makes outstanding Dieselpunk and/or Art Deco builds is oddly enough a bit of a challenge. You might think that with all the straight lines, ease of making curves, that this architectural choice would be endemic in Second Life, but oddly... it isn't. However, if one looks hard enough, you can always find gems - and I would say I've found one with Rashka's Respository!

Fancy Store III

Displaying all trademarks of Art Deco, bordering on Streamline Moderne, the Raska's Repository has an excellent selection of era designs, ready to adorn any genre sim, or your own private location with a touch of Dieselpunk style!

Fancy Park

One nice aspect of Raska's Repository is the selection of non-building items, such as the "Fancy Park" above, or the "Fancy Gate Tower" below. Much in the Art Deco tradition the austere geometric shapes are a welcome addition to SL design, and if one wants to add even more Deco touches (e.g. Sunburst designs, repeating chevrons, etc...) the builds are sold as Mod, so you can tweak to your heart's content!

If you are interested in seeing some of the builds in world, I'm afraid you'll be limited to the market, as their in-world location seems to be off-line (at least the last time I visited it, per the Marketplace link). One of the notable icons of the Dieselpunk era is the emergence of automobiles. Although many RL vehicles are exceptionally beautiful, SL has its own version of era vehicles, as demonstrated by the impressive vehicles designed and produced by Gorgon Motorcars, of Seraph City!

Mr. Nix Sands merges classic styling with the unique aspects of Streamline Moderne, and his own unique touch (as can be seen with the three wheeled "Tango Super Sport", above), to provide some of the most notable Dieselpunk vehicles in Second Life.

Jazz Venue Reviews: The Jazz Castle

To get back into the groove of reviewing Jazz locations, I'm starting off with Belac's Jazz Castle, the "Home of the Jazz Kings". A new venue to me, I went with an open mind, and was very pleasenlty surprised with the Jazz Castle!

The main dance area is quite expansive, with plenty of room to grab a bit of space for you and your companion! Don't mind the tinies - they don't take up much space...

The Main Stage had a nice setup, and from seeing the stage and placquards, they aside from their main smooth Jazz feed, they have live performances, including a Miss TweetyVon Wigglesworth, who specializes in swing tributes (a personal favorite genre of mine)!

I believe the photos on the back wall are further artists, though I hadn't seen any further information regarding them. Still, there is plenty of seating to simply relax, enjoy some music, and perhaps play a game of "magic potions"...

So, the basics...
Music: Smooth Jazz feed via Sky.FM, but with additional guest performers (please visit for further details)
Style: Mostly Art Deco and some Moderne interspersed in the design... and the outside is, well... a castle!
Traffic: Light to Medium - the times I visited it wasn't too busy, but its traffic numbers are over 1000, so perhaps I simply pop in at the wrong times (lol)... Then again, no lag issues, which is *really nice*!
Bottom Line: I have to still catch a performance, but I liked the layout, the music was relaxing, I'm certain I will return in the future to The Jazz Castle!

The Dieselpunk Encyclopedia

The beginning of 2012 saw the grand opening of a new repository for Dieselpunk information and lore - the Dieselpunk Encyclopedia! This new endeavor, by Lord K and Mr. L. Amyett, is a central location where one can familiarize oneself with the fascinating world of Dieselpunk. Hello! After a bit of an absence, I'm working toward revitalizing this small blog on Jazz, Dieselpunk, and Virtual Worlds, through its old name, SL Jazz After Midnight. Here is some of the why's and what's coming in this blog…

First, I enjoy Jazz. I like to indulge in other types of music, and have been doing so quite frequently. However. listening to Jazz has been something that I have taken for granted, especially the early classic Jazz artists (I'm quite a fan of Lionel Hampton, and enjoy my Pandora stream, listening to him while I write), and feel the need to return to those roots. SL has plenty of Jazz venues, however, there are plenty that use it as a search "fish-hook", to attract traffic. So as you arrive to what you may think is an enjoyable Jazz interlude, you actually end up rezzing in a "bar" with a DJ playing Sammy Hagar, talking about how much tequila she drinks in RL (/me rolls eyes), which can be frustrating. Therefore, as the title implies, I'll visit venues, especially ones which refelct the Jazz era (say 1920 through the 1950s, to be generous - I also enjoy the Rat Pack's stylings, albeit it is on the "far edges" of Dieselpunk), and giving my impressions of the location. If a place is good (or at least, if I like it), I'll say so - if it has nothing to do with Jazz, I'll give you the heads up on that as well!

Secondly, I am quite fond of the Dieselpunk era. Not that I don't like Steampunk - I've been writing on it for over half a decade (the original Steampunk blog I deleted started in November of 2006, but as I can't "prove" I was writing on it then, I'll have to wait until May of 2012 to claim the "Half Decade" title of Steampunk blogging). Still, I have an affinity for the era - social mannerisms, architecture, fiction, and many other aspects of the genre. I don't know if the genre will grow as quickly as Steampunk, but I have an optimistic view it will grow well, as the genre matures, not only in SL but in RL (real life) as well. Please bear in mind, I'll leave the RL Dieselpunk to the DP blogs and fourms, which do a yeoman job of expanding the genre, but I'll occasionally dip my toe in as well (e.g. I'm indulging in a newfound enthusiasm for fedoras {Thank you, Fedora Lounge!} - just need the rest of the attire to match)!

Also, I hope to highlight some of the DP genre and locations in Second Life. Over the past few months, I've noticed a steady stream of visitors, in spite of no new entries being made on the blog. I'm not quite sure if its for Jazz, Dieselpunk, both, or for some other reason. Nonetheless, I'm hoping that it'll be for both (or more) reasons, so I'll keep working to ensure the latest information is provided regarding not only the SL Jazz scene, but the emerging SL Dieselpunk scene.

Finally, I believe that Dieselpunk and associated aspect of the genre (obviously Jazz, but also archecture, and RP/storytelling, to name a couple) are creating inroads in Second Life. Linden Labs (the owners of Second Life) have chosen to highlight the genres of Vampires (and by association the Bloodlines" game) - perhaps due to the popularity of Vampire literature, and Steampunk (which has been a boon to the genre - many of those who enjoy Steampunk are often not able to make a trek to a convention, therefore SL provide a good outlet). I believe that Dieselpunk will make its own way in the virtual worlds for its own reasons. In an effort to promote them, I"ll be updating a list (and associated SLurls) for genre SL locations. I'm hoping that Dieselpunk will begin to gain ground in Second Life and establish its own notable corner in the larger virtual worlds.

Happy New Year wishes!

Hello and a Happy New Year! The SL Jazz After Midnight is recovering from its long hangover, and is back at the front of the bar, to re-kindle the long simmering interest in Second Life Jazz and Dieselpunk!

Well, actually a lot has changed in the Jazz and Dieselpunk venues in Second Life... though, there are steadfast underpinings which hold a positive view in world. Starting with my locale, Seraph City, major changes have taken place, including the new Xcentricty venue, the arrival of the Primgraph, and the issue which has had the greatest impact on the sim, the was the migration of of the Java Jive to the northeast corner of the city, where the New Champagne Rooms once stood.

Also arriving this year was the Daily Prim, part of the Primgraph Press empire...

... complete with its classic Art Deco foyer!

Even with the fluidity of the sim's population, we do welcome new arrivals, such as Miss Quis Greenwood, and with a few parcels available, there is room to grow.

Finally, the Creighton Building is home not only to the Seraph City's skating rink, but to the adventures of the Knight of the Sky, whose latest adventures are document on the news-stand just outside the entrance!

Seraph City has changed, and I'll be reviewing the coming and goings in the city. As expected, I'll be tapping on my dear Breezy's shoulder for club reviews, as the jazz club scene in Second Life is always an adventure in itself. So... between Jazz and Dieselpunk, I'm confident I'll be kept busy, and hopefully provide plenty of interesting reading this year! One last note, the blog will undergo some updating, to include RL Dieselpunk and some era Jazz locations, so do keep your eyes "peeled" for more to come!

Jazz Venue Reviews: The Elegance House of Jazz

Hello! Been a bit since the last venue entry, but I'm afraid that catching up with the remaining blogs (not to mention RL) has cut in a bit club reviews. Not to worry, however, as today is a hidden gem, which is not only a pleasure to visit, but lag free, and a nice overall atmosphere. This hip new joint is a small corner of SL called the Elegance House of Jazz.

There are plenty of locations to enjoy Jazz in SL, each with their own quirks... and these quirks can be good, or not so good. However, one of the circumstances I often encounter is when my dear Breezy get a yen to do a bit of pixel twisting, and sweetly asks me to take her someplace. Often times, I've furiously sifted through odd titles of clubs I've never seen before, playing the "search lotto". Sadly, my luck mirrors RL - the "Jazz" club is garish, a lag fest, or even worse, play no Jazz music at all - just something unintelligible (I can handle bebop & improvisation, but if it takes a turn into "rap music", it might as well be Belorussian farmer folk music - no offence to Belorussians)!

But... one does get lucky at times... which is exactly what happened when I spun the wheel and landed on the Elegance House of Jazz! The Elegance House of Jazz (EHOJ) is an excellent getaway for enjoying Jazz in SL. As previously mentioned, the main club is well laid out, lag-less, and though the Jazz selection tends to veer more towards the Jazz-Soul branch of the Jazz tree, the selection is very good.

Interestingly enough, there is more to explore at the EHOJ. The club is only one part of the entire complex - there is a clothing stores, which are common enough, but there is a Cognac & Cigar Lounge, a McDonalds, and even a Starbucks on site! I'd certainly recommend a visit to EHOJ, enjoy the atmosphere (more modern than I usually follow, but very well-done within a modern theme), have a cigar, or even an espresso after a long night of dancing! Seraph City Travelogue: The Empire Jazz Club

I've covered quite a bit of SL Jazz during the few years of the SL Jazz After Midnight, but one locale that I've neglected has been my own proverbial back yard, Seraph City (SC). As SL's first dedicated attempt at a Dieselpunk themed sim, the build has a number of interesting structures and locations. One of which is my own small jazz venue, the Empire Jazz Club.

When SC first started, I didn't want a residential location, so coupled with my indulgence of jazz, I decided to add a small club, reminiscent of the idealized small jazz holes of the '30s and '40s. As I've never been accused of being a builder, I chose to find an existing work to fit the bill. I found Miss Blue Jishnu's Art Deco Jazz Club, which was perfect, though she was kind enough to make a few small modification to its dimensions to fit the plot its on.

There have been inquiries regarding events or chantuses visiting, but for the time being, it is what you see - a small place to listen to jazz, or perhaps dance with that special friend. There remains the distinct possiblity of a future event, depending on some developing circumstances, but for the time being, its just a place to relax and enjoy some music. An overview of Parc de la Siren

An odd circumstance developed from the size of the Empire Jazz Club, however. I ended with a large space behind the build, adjacent to a similar issue with my dear partner Breezy Carver. Over time, this blank spot has housed general builds, storefronts, and even a movie studio, but nothing ever seemed quite right.

This question has vexed me until the other day, when I decided to renovate the location into my attempt at an era park. Parc de la Siren is a small attachment where one can indulge in more music after shopping at the Carrington, or if one wishes not to be enclosed inside the club. Plenty of space for a bit of dancing is available, and one can use the dance generators from inside the club, or the one hidden just off the main park, by the water.

The park is still a work in progress, so it might look a *tad* different from these photos, but it will essentially remain the same. Art Deco in SL - Bay City

Odd as it might seem, there is a minimal representation of Art Deco in Second Life. There are a handful of sims which recreate this stunning genre, but perhaps the oldest one in SL is Bay City. Since 2008, Bay City has been a steadfast stronghold of Art Deco construction in the Virtual worlds.

I can't say that the entire collection of sims is dedicated to Art Deco, but it does have some iconic structures on its land, such as the Bay City Airport, the Cafe Deco, and the Bay City Center, to name a few. Unfortunately, they tend to be spread out disparately throughout the sim, so its not quite a "total experience" of Art Deco, as some of the landowners deviate from the genre architecture, either through construction or very large advertisements, which aren't exactly "in genre". But business is business, and the formula must work, considering Bay City longevity in SL.

During the month of May, Bay city will be celebrating its 3rd anniversary in SL. It will include a parade through the sim, and a live concert at the fairground in the North Channel.

One location which caught my eye was the Cafe Deco - a stunning representation of Art Deco / Streamline Moderne interior design and construction. It tends to be a bit empty, but for a getaway, or photoshoot, its difficult to find a better genre location in SL.

The exterior of the Bay City Airport

One location that merits a visit is the Bay City Airport. Its structure is classic Art Deco, with stylings more representational of traditional visuals of Art Deco. A beauty to behold, both inside and out, but as an infohub, there are always a number of noobs populating the location. And as follows with noobs is noob-nonsense, do don't be surprised at what you might encounter at teh entrance of the airport.

Still the interiors are streamlined and asthetically beautiful, and merit a visit. Once past the aformentioned noobs, one can explore other parts of the airport, including the magazine store, luggage store, milk bar (I didn't see any White Russians - grr), and of course, my favorite spot, the bar!

I always forget!

Do make it a point of visiting Bay City, and exploring its disparate but visually enticing Art Deco builds! If you have the time, pay a visit during their parade and get a feel for the city!

Jazz Venue Reviews: Divine Jazz Club

Its been a bit since I've updated the Jazz Venue Reviews in SL, so its about time I get back to the basic theme of the SL Jazz after Midnight ... Jazz! Today's review is the Divine Jazz Club, a nice, secluded club, which is part of the Casablanca mall complex.

The overall interior is reminiscent of a well built Art Deco club - it styling is sleek, classic, and easy to navigate. That is reflected in its simplicity - a large central dance floor with a high ceiling, a central stage, and seating areas to the right and left. Simple, but a good design.

There are two music choices here... the first is the default "Martini in the Morning". Basic, and nothing new. They do a good job, as those in SL know, MITM is pretty much everywhere. However, the do advertise "live" music - though I couldn't find a schedule. All that was available was a sign with a performer's name, who I assume is the live chanteuse.

If you choose so, the rooftop is available for dancing as well!

As part of a mall sim, it seems to be an appendage to the build - a means to attract customers. Not necessarily a bad thing - in fact, if you happen to be looking for a nice, quiet place to spend time with your special friend, I'd suggest a visit. Don't expect a lot of novelty, but do expect peace and quiet, which sometimes is all you need! To pay a visit, please turn to:

Suckerpunch - Dieselpunk's newest production for the mainstream media...

Suckerpunch is one of the first movies of 2011 which shows off aspects of Dieselpunk to the larger public. Keep in mind, it's not exactly a genre movie, as there is plenty of "new" technology one can see from the trailer (e.g. helicopters, HUD displays, modern firearms), and fantasy aspects (e.g. the huge dragon), which diverges from what one might consider is a traditional Dieselpunk movie (e.g. Film Noir, Cliff-hangers, ect..).

Still, with psudo-militaristic attire, zeppelins, enemies with spiked helmets (yes, reminiscent of some WW1 German army attire), there is a lot of Dieselpunk in Suckerpunch, so I would assume that if one accepts the movie at a basic level, and not expect *too* much, it'll do quite well. Yes, after a two-month layoff, I'm back with the SJ JAM... yet again. This blog has been a bit of an on-goign project (aka, I need to keep it up to date more), but after a bit of consideration, I've decided continue the blog, with some Jazz reviews, but focusing more on the small but growing Dieselpunk genre in SL. The SL Jazz scene ebbs and flows, and I'll still be covering it (along with my partner, Breezy), but I'll be including more era items (e.g. merchants and builds as well)...

Next, sad news... the Pan Pacific closed a few months ago. A beautiful build, but unfortunately I believe the owners had an over-optimistic view of running entertainment events in SL. A beautiful build (which was actually for sale on SL Exchange), and associated build, but alas, the SL economy is a harsh mistress (my apologies to Heinlein), and it became victim to it.

There is a projected plan to expand Seraph City, growing the only dedicated Dieselpunk sim in SL. Not set date on it, and the details are sill sketchy, but I'll keep any readers here up-to-date on the goings on!

Other than that... I'll endeavor to keep the SL Jam more up-to-date with Dieselpunk news in SL, on a weekly basis, at the very least!

Jazz Venue Reviews: The Elegance Ballroom

The Elegance Ballroom is one of the "New Wave" of Jazz/Ballroom venues in Second Life. (By "New Wave", I refer to it being less than 2 years old... the "Classic" Jazz/Ballrooms are listed on the sidebar below.) Encompassing two sims, you'll arrive in essentially the center of the sims and will be surrounded by an option of shopping locales.

Though expansive, there are numerous TPs around the sim (as shown above), which will take you directly to the ballroom. A simple touch-and-tp puts you at the entrance of the venue.

Pros: Spacious shopping area (quite a bit swanky of selections to choose from, especially for the ladies), gracious hosts (quick to say hello and quite friendly), and the sign below of upcoming live events is a very nice touch. As far as music is concerned, I couldn't quite identify the feed the first time I visited, but the second time I popped in, they had a live performer). The grounds of the build itself are exceptionally well done - I did like the fountains on the build, along with the very good ice skating rink (in time for the holidays)!

Cons: Few, if any - though I did encounter one that was a tad surprising. While visiting during a live event, the performer was asking for support for the venue and the employees. Quite understandable, but she came across as lecturing the customers/visitors that it was essentially their responsibility to ensure the tips were provided. While I would believe this is limited to a singe individual, were I not here for a review, I would have simply TP'ed to another location. Seriously, I understand that one aspect of income for music venues are tips provided by those listening, but I don't relish being lecture during my time away from RL. Aside from this circumstance, any other quibbles fall in the realm of personal preference (e.g. no flight, a long walk to the venue, ect...)

Would I go back? Perhaps. While the location was well done and the staff was courteous, the though of being told how to spend my monies (even if they are only Lindens) is a bit off-putting. I'll return, and update as to future visits.

Just a quick updated to the blog, on a cold Monday afternoon! I've been wrestling with the format and length of the previous venue reviews in SL. Since there are an exceptionally long list of club, and I am hoping to be as comprehensive as possible, I'll be whittling down the reviews to the following format...

The Jazz Singer, by AlphaMale1980

Description of the club: First impressions, appearance, music, and any other notable issues about a venue.

Pros: Good things about the club.

Cons: Disappointing issues that might arise about the club being covered.

Overall: This will essentially be the same, would I go back?

The focus will be on trying to cover as much as possible in the SL Jazz scene, and as the club venues tend to be where people go to dance or listen to live performances, I figured I'd focus on that. Jazz Venue Reviews: The Fiume Jazz Club, SL Chicago

The Fiume Jazz Club is a classic jazz venue located on the SL Chicago sim. As previously mentioned during the review of SL Chicago last week, there is more to SL Chicago than role play - though that is an integral part of the sim (I believe they held their first mobster trial and sentencing this week)! But for non-rp events, the Fiume Jazz Club is the place to be!

First Impressions - To arrive at the Fiume, one can either take a direct LM to the locale, or arrive via the SL Chicago teleportation system (red phone booths - a nice touch). No lag when I arrived, and it is a nice place to indulge in a bit of Jazz.

Venue Appearance - The entrance to the Fiume is easy to navigate, and the build is well done. The dance floor is large enough to hold a good number of individuals. There are subtle notes of an older type of club (e.g. the hat check area), but nothing out of the ordinary. One note - the sliver of land on the side of SL Chicago is non-RP, though era attire is encouraged. Once you cross the bridge, you'll be requested to follow the sim's RP rules.

Waiting for Breezy - thankfully, TPs are quick!

Atmosphere - Nice, quiet, and personable... as it is part of a RP sim, you'll see more people in RP, though it isn't required. The attire is a bit more formal than average clubs (e.g. suits for gents, nice dresses for ladies), so keep this in mind... there are clothes stores just north of the club. No 'spolder balls, no pestering for tips (though there is a tip-jar at the bar), just a nice place to dance.

Music - As its part of a Jazz-era, Dieselpunk sim, the Fiume Jazz club is most certianly a Jazz venue. I don't recall the feed they used the last time I visited, but a subsequent visit had no music at all - an odd oversight, but I'm certain its a fluke issue. One nice aspect is the club owner, a Mr. Shepham Moorlord, and his partner, Miss Starla Huntress, are working attentively to attract musicians and if I recall correctly, plans are (as of this writing) to have one live performer weekly at the Fiume - as I learn of more regarding this, I promise to keep the readership informed!

Overall - Would I come back?... Yes. A great location, and from the discussion I had with the owner, it has great potential to be an excellent Jazz-era venue for indugling in classic tunes. First, my apologies for being a bit behind the curve with the SL Jam - RL events have taken an odd twist, including a potential big screen blip for my main blog, the Steampunk Tribune, along with a few other odds and ends.

However, I did want to make the post that I've started a new blog (go figure) for Searph City businesses, titled the Searph City Advertiser. This blog will highlight the businesses in Seraph City, including profiling sim businesses, new releases, upcoming social events, and much more (well, ideally much more). Its still in its infancy, but I'll be cross posting to the SL JAM with any Dieselpunk events which take place in SC. Dieselpunk Travels: SL Chicago, Roaring 20s Mobster RP

Dieselpunk and the 1920s Jazz era have certain iconic imagery which people recognize it by – flappers, jazz musicians, G-men, and of course, gangsters. When I opened the Empire Jazz Club, I was frequently asked if there was any gangster or mobster RP in Seraph City. Unfortunately, RP in Seraph City is minimal, and most gangster areas tended to be along the lines of “modern gangsters” (certainly not mobsters in the classic 1920s sense).

However, a while back I learnedof a new sim which not only fit the Dieselpunk genre, but had a very involved 1920s gangster role play. This sim was SL Chicago, the Roaring Twenties.

SLChicago is a sim dedicated to the 1920s gangster genre. This being said, an emphasis is placed on genre authenticity, as one learns when they arrive at the main arrival point in the sim. In the arrival skybox, a number of things are very apparent. First, the four main rules for the sim are laid out, mostly involving conduct and appearance in Chicago.

Once one reads the overall guidelines of the sim, changes into era attire, obtains a HUD for RP involvement, and joins the Roaring Chicago group, one can tp down to the sim. The sim’s TPs itself provides a number of locations one can visit, all accessible through its menu. Additionally, once on the sim itself, the TPs are easily located in phone booths – a nice touch.

The SL Chicago sim itself is a recreation of 1920’s Chicago (a logical deduction from the sim’s name). However, though the sim was not built to “spec” (e.g. a separate builder was not hired to build the sim, per se – a number of builds were from “off the shelf” items, easily obtainable from the SL Exchange), the build is well crafted for its purpose. Notable is not only its layout a grid (akin to RL Chicago), but the adverts are era specific and generously applied throughout the sim, adding to its genre authenticity.

The main appeal of Chicago is its gangster Role Play (RP). When Seraph City (SC) first opened, I was peppered with questions regarding any potential “gangster rp” in SC, to which I had to respond that there was none. However, Roaring Chicago has taken up the challenge. The rp itself is still fairly new, and is developing, but the Chicago participants have been quite gracious in offering to help individuals develop personas and delve into the gangster world.

Another enjoyable aspect of Chicago is its city streets. I played with the environmental editor to develop a “Film Noir” background, and believe that the outcomes were successful, but certainly enhanced by the attention to detail paid to the sim’s era appearance. The “storyline” of the events taking place in Chicago are narrated via group notifications, almost akin to a breaking news story or era radio “interruption to normal programming”. Even if one doesn’t regularly engage in rp, you’ll be kept up to date with ongoing events in Chicago.

The closing of the Sphynx Jazz Club...

Received a bit of bad news the other day... it appears that while serarching for a Jazz venue to visit, I discovered that the Sphynx Jazz Club has moved back to the Pharaohs, so to speak (yes, I do apologize for the pun)! Seriously, the Sphynx Jazz Club was an outstanding build with an Egyptian theme. Large, well built, and hosting numerous live performers, the Sphynx was a location with I enjoyed visiting with Breezy (as seen in the photos she has kindly provided).

Alas, it has been replaced with a country sim at the same coordinates, and my efforts to locate it have been unsuccessful. As such, I have to assume the Sphynx is no longer, which is a shame, as it was an excellent Jazz venue.

Jazz Venue Reviews: Charlie's Neighborhood Jazz Club

While hunting down a locale to do a bit of dancing at, I stumbled upon Charlie's Neighborhood Jazz Club. As the previous TPs for alternate locations were unsuccessful, I decided to throw caution to the wind and give Charlie's a try. Turns out to have been a good choice!

First Impressions - Charlie's Neighborhood Jazz club is a two story build, with no lag, and well built, even if it has a unique layout. It is two stories, but with the center area hollowed out, transit to the second level is quite easy. It isn't overly busy, but it does get a fair amount of traffic based on its listing on SL's search.

Venue Appearance - Lots of posters, and a blue tiled dance floor in front of a stage are the key aspects of Charlie's build. Plenty of additional artwork of reminiscent of Jazz performers, both in RL and SL. I did like the tables and musical equipment, as they added to the atmosphere, as well as the bar tucked away on the side of the build.

I found s few things, such as the translator box on the middle of the dance floor a bit odd, but the dance animations were easily enough found, and there was plenty of space on the floor to dance nonetheless. There were a couple of gaming tables (as seen below), as I believe the owner also runs a neighboring casino.

Atmosphere - Quiet and enjoyable. No distractions, no 'sploder balls, no gimmicks - just a nice location to dance and listen to Jazz music. There are a couple of adverts for in-world musicians, and a couple of tip-jars for the venue, but nothing imposing to interfere with your enjoyment.

Music - A key aspect that had a unique twist here. I wasn't exactly certain of the feed to reference, but I did notice that there were SL Jazz musicians works included with the standard Jazz feeds. A very nice touch to include "local" (e.g. SL) musicians with a good selection of Jazz music from RL - kudos!

Overall, would I come back? - Yes

A cozy build, comfortable surroundings, and an excellent selection of Jazz music make Charlie's Neighborhood Jazz club a must-visit when searching for a quiet location to enjoy good music and a bit of quiet time with you dancing partner.

Jazz Venue Reviews: The Vault

The Vault is one of the more traveled era venues for the "classic" jazz route in Second Life. Located on the Old Hollywood sim, it has a classic Art Deco build, and what nice is the surrounding area also has the era design to it (aka, yet more Art Deco). In time I'll review the rest of the sim, but for now, The Vault is the main topic of discussion.

First Impressions - You'll arrive at the venue at its main revolving door, but its a phantom entrance, so you can just walk straight through. The layout is square, with the main stage centered in the Club. A bar is located to the left, and a shopping enterprise is directly to the right. There are two dance areas on the upper floors as well - fairly spacious and secluded.

Venue Appearance - The Vault has made an effort to tip its hat to the classic era of Jazz - more along the lines of the late 40's to early/mid 50s in appearance, reminding me of the Vegas clubs of the RL era. It is spacious, nice areas to dance without being "on top" of other dancers. The dance ball animations will take a moment to find, as they are on the back wall (one is red and sparkle-ly, but the other (couples animation) blends in somewhat with the photo of Mr. Martin). The desisgn is a bit more on the late Diselpunk / Jazz era, I'd say it essentially abuts on the "Atomic Age" (mid to late 50s) in design. Still, a well designed and built venue.

Atmosphere - Bit of a mixed bag with this issue. The host was cordial, and no membership offers were pushed upon me when I arrived, but as the venue appeals to a larger crowd, there is a larger cast of visitors, some a bit odd, who visit. Regardless of my biases, the atmosphere was light-hearted, and there weren't constant requests to donate money to the venue or DJ, which was nice. Plenty of banter, but I was able to enjoy a bit of privacy as well. A refreshing change from the traditional larger clubs methodologies for raising money. Though, do feel free to provide a little tip for Mr. Finchley - he's always on duty!

Music - Again, a bit of a dilemma. When I originally arrived, the DJ was playing a set of Blues, but the selections tended to veer off from the regular music of the era. I did become a bit annoyed at times that I switched to Pandora's Lionel Hampton feed. However, the next DJ did play a very good, genre-accurate set of musical selections. Still, I would have preferred more Jazz, though I assume a larger audience has to be addressed. A listing of future performers would have been a nice touch.

Overall - Would I go back? Yes.

I liked the area, atmosphere, and the early 50s look of the Vault. I wasn't able to easily locate a notecard indicating what their future performances would be. Still, if you are looking for a DP/Jazz era to spend a bit of time at, I would certainly recommend the Vault, though to take a peek to ensure the musical selections is what you wish to indulge in. Additionally, do take a moment to step outside the Vault, and visit some of the unique Art Deco and Streamline Moderne works at the Old Hollywood sim. Many of the stores are not from the era, but as the Chinese saying goes, "Business is Business, so you do what you have to do". Do pay it a visit - it seems to be a work in progress, but it has very nice builds, such as the "Chat and Chew" hotdog stand, the Viva Kustoms store, and of course its iconic HOLLYWOOD sign!

Jazz Venue Reviews: The Harlow Jazz Speakeasy

I figured I'd start my reviews once again with one of my favorite Jazz era genre clubs, the Harlow Jazz Speakeasy. Located on the same sim as the Cotton Club, it has been made to reflect the classic appearance of a Jazz club from the height of the Dieselpunk era (from about 1918 to 1939). Located across the bridge from the main venue, the Harlow Jazz Speakeasy is, in my opinion, the real reason to visit this sim - here's why...

First Impressions - The Harlow Jazz Speakeasy (HJS) is part of the Cuir's Cotton Club (CCC) complex, and is overshadwed by said venue. The CCC is what one might call a "general purpose" club, with a variety of music, events, ect... - not too much in the way of Jazz music. A bit towards the south east of the main venue, sits the Harlow Jazz Speakeasy, one of the best 1920's in Second Life. Upon arrival you'll be facing the HJS's cigar girl, Miss Cocao Columbia, and to the right and left are ladies' clothing stores (ack)! No lag, mostly because of the lack of traffic - which is a shame in one sense, at it is a gem, but a good thing, as one doesn't have to wade to a spot to dance.

Venue Appearance - Probably one of the best things of the HJC. Done in a custom build, its Art Deco build is reminiscent of old Hollywood clubs. Passing inside shows a compact but central dance floor, traditional "dinner chairs and tables" (yes, eating is academic in SL, but in the old RL 1920 I suppose they had to). Nice lighting, a small stage with a graphic feed, and slowly rotating lights add to the jazz-era feel of the club. The Harlow certainly has the feel of a Jazz club.

Atmosphere - No gimmicks, just a nice place to enjoy classic 1920s Jazz music. The two individuals on staff (Miss Columbia, the "cigar girl", and Mr. Valentino Oliveri, who seems to be perpetually playing the piano) never interrupt your stay, request money - they just allow you (and your companion, if one is with you) to enjoy the environs and music.

Music - The Harlow streams non-profit big band station, 891. KCEA, a California radio station that specializes in Big Band music. They have a wide selection of choices and play excellent (and frequently unfamiliar selections) from the era. KCEA actually takes requests (I have yet to try it, though), and their website has a listing of their specialty shows. Interestingly enough, this station is run from the grounds of Menlo-Altherton High School, in Altherton, CA, by the local school district, which holds its FCC license since 1979. Overall - Would I come back? A vehement YES! Though it doesn't get much traffic, it is a great place to relax, quite enough to enjoy the music and not be pestered with local chat, and usually clear of traffic, so it you (and your sweetie) wish to twist a few virtual toes, you can do so in peace. Since discovering it, it has stayed in my top five picks for clubs. I enjoy Jazz and going to SL Jazz clubs. However, the selection of clubs in the virtual world is varied, from outstanding places to enjoy quality Jazz music to those that are worse than a waste of time. Knowing what a Jazz venue to visit is a start, which is where the SL Jazz After Midnight (SL JAM) plays a part. I usually wrangle my partner, Miss Breezy Carver into accompanying me to a variety of Jazz clubs during the weekends, allowing opportunities to visit new and established venues.

I do have my quirks and biases, just as everyone else, so I've tried to reach a somewhat even-handed rating scale. Originally, I gave "hard" numerical ratings for a venue, but after consideration, the real rating of an SL Jazz venue is "would I (or another visitor) come back to it"? I'd assume that's the question that most everyone thinks - and I'll be adding my own two cents to the discussion... Here are the criteria I use to see if I like a club ...

First Impressions – What is the club like at first arrival? Is the build well done or is it poorly constructed? Is it very laggy or minimally laggy? What is the traffic listed as (which may affect the number of people on site)? Does it seem like a good place to enjoy some Jazz?

Venue Appearance – What is the interior of the venue like (spacious, cramped, open air)? How is the interior appearance (well designed, any specific genre, anything unique)? Basically, is it a nice place to spend some time, or is the place a bit of a disappointment?

Atmosphere – Is the venue busy or empty? Is the club exclusive to musical performances or are there other distraction (e.g. "sploder balls" or other things akin to that)? Is there a mall area, and does it impinge on the the venue? What is the management like – do the (never/occasionally/aggressively) ask for financial support? Once you've arrived, can you enjoy some music in peace?

Music - Is it a Jazz club or does it just use the term as a draw? What kind of music is played (modern Jazz, classic Jazz, smooth Jazz, ect…)? Do they have live performances, or is it strictly a feed (aka “Martini in the Morning). Basically, is it worth listening to the Jazz music or are you better off listening to Pandora?

Overall - The basic question remains, would I come back to the venue?

Mind you, the reviews on the SL JAM are my express opinions, but I do hope that it'll either encourage you to try new locations, or encourage you to provide a counter point to my own perceptions of a location. Regardless, thanks for stopping by, and I'll be looking forward to future visits!

Dieselpunk Travelogue: The Pan Pacific Auditorium

The Pan Pacific Auditorium

During my hunt for places in Second Life which are from the Dieselpunk (DP) genre, I came across the Pan Pacific Auditorium. I had to smile as I immediately recognized the sleek lines of the Streamline Moderne architecture, but had admit, I knew very little about the Pan Pacific.

The Real Life Pan Pacific was built in 1935, and located just north-west of Los Angeles. It was a gigantic buiilding, over 100,000 square feet and able to hold 6,000 people at a time. It was used for political events, car shows, circuses, conventions, and concerts. Elvis Presley played at the Pan Pacific, and General Eisenhower gave a speech there a month prior to being elected president. It remained a popular location until the Los Angeles Convention Center opened, which signaled the beginning of the end of the Pan Pacific. Though it fell on hard times, it was placed on the list of National Historical Places Registry, but sadly burnt down 1989. The SL version, however, is quite alive and well. Mr. Bixyl Shuftan, of the SL Newser, and up-and-coming SL news blog, was able to angle an interview with the owners of the Pan Pacific, Amxscott Hammill, who related some of the challenges involved with his original Pan Pacific build in There.com, his migration to SL, and accomplishing his dream of making the SL Pan Pacific Auditorium a reality. In addition to their displays, the Pan Pacific also has a regular music schedule, with numerous performances taking place during the week. Like its RL incarnation, there is plenty of space for the events, and for an up-to-date listing is available just outside the auditorium.

There are a good number of both apartment and kiosk (business) rental spaces available on the grounds of the Pan Pacific's sim. A single store can be had for L$100/wk for 100 prims (which seems pretty reasonable), and the apartments are a tad more, but have an 800 prim allowance at a comparable price.

After a bit of a hiatus, SL Jazz After Midnight is back as the Dieselpunk Herald (DPH) and on active duty! Having attended to numerous RL issues, I am making it a point of reviving the DPH to cover the small but growing Dieselpunk / Pulp / Jazz Era / Noir locations in the virtual worlds (including, but not limited to Second Life, but other grids as the genre expands and grows)

But why the name change? A variety of factors, but mostly a desire to indulge in the full spectrum of the Jazz era to include Dieselpunk, (Film) Noir, Pulp, and classic Jazz. The URL will remain the same for now, but I'll be taking a larger vista into account between virtual worlds and the Dieselpunk genre. Dieselpunk Destinations - Seraph City

The first Second Life Dieselpunk city for the SL Jazz after I'll write about happens to be one where I reside, Seraph City. A relatively new sim (opened in mid April of this year), the sim has progressed smartly towards its intended goal of a Dieselpunk city.

As one might expect, the most challenging aspect and noticeable feature of any Dieselpunk sim is its architecture. When one thinks of the Jazz era, the visions of older buildings mixed with an infusion of Art Deco comes to mind. The current makeup of Seraph City originally had a higher number of older vice Deco builds, but as the sim matures, more of the Art Deco (and even some Streamline Moderne) have made an appearance on the streets.

Another key component is ensuring the entities in Seraph City are within the genre of the era. A concerted effort has been made to keep the stores in-genre as much as possible. While there are some goods from beyond the 1920s to the early 1950s, the mainstay of businesses focus on the Dieselpunk genre for their sales in Seraph City.

The Carrington, an Art Deco gem just off the right from the initial TP point, hosts four merchants, BlakOpal, The Curious Seamstress, Tres Beau, and Nymphetamine Botique), who have clothing lines for both ladies and gentlemen of the era. Mr. Nix Sands' Xcentricity branch, well known in Caledon, also has a presence in Seraph City directly off the main TP point (and sells his outstanding fedora - a "must have" for any fellows visiting the city)! Directly to the South East is the New Champagne Room's shopping district, hosting another large segment of excellent purveyors of fine Jazz Era and Dieselpunk goods, including Weimar, the Swank Brothers, Old Time Prims, and Melu Deco, to name a few.

Speaking of the New Champagne Rooms, early on in the sim, the owner, Miss Ahnyanka Delphin, moved the main establishment to the SE corner of the sim, and hosts daily burlesque shows - always an entraining evening to visit the ladies of the enterprise.

If one wishes to indulge in the music of the era, there are currently two venues available - the Seraph Club (easily found with its brilliant neon lights, reminiscent of classic locations of the era) and my own Empire Jazz Club. At the current writing, the Seraph Club is under construction, however the Empire Jazz Club is open for business. If one is seeking a quiet location to indulge in some Jazz music, there are nine classic feeds available in the club (just east of the Carrington).

The Crescent Theater recently opened in the northwestern portion of the town, and will be running a selection of productions from the era. A schedule has yet to be published, but with an impressive body of work available, there is certain to be plenty of film to indulge one's cinematographc interest.

Of course, no sime can be without its unique an iconic builds, especially in a sim replete with Art Deco and Dieselpunk cleverness - from Miss Ceejay Writer's Java Jive, Mr. M. Tenk's Blue Angel diner, to Miss Jed Dagger's Sinclair Gas Station on the edge of town, and Mr. Rip Firefly's old Air Station (beside Miss Sonatta Morale's stunning Art Deco gem on the SE corner of town), and many more hidden gems waiting to be found in Seraph City.

Jazz and Dieselpunk in Second Life

I've been giving a lot of thought as to what the direction of this blog should be, and how to best help it meet its goals - promoting Jazz in Second Life and promoting Dieselpunk / Pulp / Noir / Jazz era (choose your poison). I do like Jazz, as I think many people in SL do, and I also enjoy the Pulp era. (ed note - I'll use the term "Pulp" to encompass the entire genre - one can make an arguement for any term, but I do have to refer to it somehow, and don't relish entering the long list every time I mention the genre).

So, instead of trying to focus on all versions of Jazz, I'll be covering both SL Jazz venues that reflect the Jazz era (say the time after WW1 to just after the end of WW2 - the begining of the Atomic age), along with Pulp sims in Second Life. There aren't as many said sims (perhaps a handful) as compared to Steampunk (as I've been covering for ages at the Steampunk Tribune), but nonetheless, having a place to focus on them is only a positive. Jazz Venue News: Comings and Goings...the Cotton Club and USO club

Last week saw some dramatic changes in the Second Life Jazz era scene, with two major icons making major changes. First, the USO club, a 40's dance venue, had its last dance, and shuttered its doors on Sunday. A mainstay in the Pulp genre. Still working on the details behind its closing, but the main residential area will remain. There may be hope it will return in the near future, and if so, it'll be noted here!

On a more upbeat note, the Cotton Club, on the verge of being dispersed to pixels, has found a new owner, Miss Vivienne Dufaux, who has stepped forward to keep the sim afloat. No word on any projected changes for the sim, but I do hope to make contact with her soon (I'm certain she's quite busy with the transfer of the sim at the moment).

One note - if you do search for the Cotton Club sim, keep in mind there is a "Cotton Club" Jazz location, which is *not* the Cotton Club sim. Jazz Venue Reviews: Dubai Jazz

I decided to start with a proverbial "shot in the dark" with Jazz Venues, choosing "Dubai Jazz Club and Mall" for the first new review. Its a stunningly built club on the deck of a yacht - very stylish, well lit, and a pleasure to the eye. Unfortunately, its all down hill from there.

The good sized, but distracting dance floor

The dance floor is surrounded by pit seating (with good animations), but the dance floor is the site of all of the action. By action, I don't mean visitors - I mean "things". Bubbles, flame circles, and an amazingly annoying light sequence that will blind you in RL (not just to speak of SL). To make matters even "better", there are two sets of said rows of five lights, which have about a 1-2 second sequence between flipping the spotlight on a person/couple - one forward, one aft (on the boat). After listening to the mediocre Jazz feed (for the life of me, I could not figure the source of it, aside from the fact it was "smooth Jazz"), I had to leave.

There is an attached mall, which is very large, but after being blinded at the Jazz club, I had no desire to go window shopping. The rest of the sim is very well done, and if exploring, merits a visit, but the Jazz club seems as if they were trying to shove too many gizmos in it, but didn't pay attention to the music or events. Perhaps the owners will consider making changes to it, but... sadly it simply seems tacked on to the mall as a draw.

Likes - Well built club, stylish with a certain type of upscale, Mediterranean-chic about it
Dislikes - Too many distractions on the dance floor (as previous mentioned), and those annoying lights!
Music - Smooth Jazz streamed feed (unidentified source)
Lag - None, there is no one there
Shopping - Complex on site
Overall - This Jazz Venue has plenty of potential, but... it has some really distracting issues. If the lights and gizmos could be pulled, and a different music feed provided, it would be a definite improvement. However, it seems to be an appendage to the main mall, so if you are looking for someplace with no traffic/lag and not concerned about the Jazz itself, then visit the Dubai Jazz club.

One endeavor I took upon myself was to re-acquaint myself with the Jazz scene in Second Life. This is based strictly on the SL "Search" ratings, and as many tend to include a wide swath of musical genres. However they are the most frequented areas when "Jazz" in entered, so I figured I'd start there. For the time being, I'll simply provide the basic list (and SLurls), and get back on the reviews as the year progresses.

Ok, this is just a starting list, but I'll be adding / updating it every quarter or so (that's the plan, at least). A few things that came back to the forefront were noobs and lag. The noobs aren't a problem, but you will find the occasional amusing anecdotes (e.g. the romantic discussions in open chat), or the odd attachment mistake (I'm sure everone has seen some kind of SL disaster - if not, visit SL Fashion Police.. a bit out of date, but still scary).

On the other hand, the lag at the big places are impressive - be ready for the proverbial "walking in soup". That's part of the price of success I postulate, so do take in account from arrival to departure. I'll be updating the SLurls, so do check back!

The Empire Jazz Club, in Seraph City, my new home

Hard to believe its been almost two years since the SL Jazz After Midnight was updated, but... I guess its about time for it. At the time, I had to make a call on which blog to continue, the Steampunk Tribune/Heliograph or SL Jazz After Midnight. As I do enjoy both genres, it was a hard call, but I went with the Steampunk Tribune, as the entries weren't as labor intensive as the SL JAM articles.

However, I recently relocated to a new sim in SL, named Seraph City. Located by my lovely partner's fashionable Haute Coutre store, the Carrington, the Empire Jazz Club is my small escape in Second Life where I can listen to to classic Jazz and Swing from the Dieselpunk / Pulp / Film Noir era, and maybe even hold a few events in the future. SC is still a growing sim, and there are plenty of music venues here - the New Champagne Rooms, the Empire Jazz Club, and one more down main street, that is yet to open.

I've decided to go ahead and try to revive the SL JAM, and though it won't be updated as frequently as the old schedule was, or as often as the Steampunk Tribune is, I will visit it regularly, and as it'll be on the Jazz Links blog, it'll be easy to find once again! Jazz Selections: 30's Jazz Clubs, Part 2 of 2

Hello again! Well, I'm dragging you (the interested reader) back even further from the great lounge era that Bennett was enjoying, back to the 1930's, with the second part of this series. Mr. Humphrey Bogart, and the legendary movie Casablanca has left its indelible mark on this era & genre of Jazz in SL. I was surprised to find how many Casablanca-related clubs there were in SL, similar but as always in SL, different. Without further ado, lets continue...

A bit non-descript, but part of its charm

This club is a small build, and it appears to be an homage build to the movie. Not much in the club beyond chairs, a bar (of course), and a nice outdoor walkway. However, for a quiet and romantic getaway, the Moonlight club is merits a visit.

Rick's Casablanca Dance Resort

This club has me a bit confounded. I've heard of clubs that have a "cover charge", but Rick's Casablanca Dance Resort was the first I actually visits that had one. Paid my token lindens to enter through the pink door (only L$ 10), and waltzed up to informational placards.

The build comprises of a Jazz dance area, and an adjoining more modern dance area. Focusing on the Jazz area, I do admit the build is nice, the floor is spacious, but... from a customer and a business viewpoint, I'm still stuck on the "cover charge".

With the multitude of clubs in SL, to require a "cover" to visit a club is either a means to discourage people from visiting (e.g. an exclusive organisation), or to control the number of visitor at the club. Both seem to be counter-intuitive to maximizing profitability in an SL club. I figure one would want to entice visitors to come to the club (especially new avs).

I do wish them luck with their venture, but that was the last cover I'll be donating to Rick's Casablanca Dance Resort. There are a plenitude of other clubs in SL that are at least as good, with no entrance fee.

This club is a nice build, with an attractive entrance, large dance floor, bar (yay!), and a small beach overlooking sunsets (when properly rendered)!

Unfortunately, it was a bit empty the times I visited it, and had difficulties "nailing down" a schedule, so do consider a visit - it does have quite a bit of potential!

Speaking of potential, Rick's fits this category in so many ways. As part of Calibur's sim, Rick's is easily one of the most magnificent Jazz ballrooms I've encountered in SL.

Unfortunately, attending events is a vexing proposition - I've attempted to join its group a number of times, and dropping in at different RL times, but to my consternation, I have never seen any action at this club.

Beautiful but empty - a sad state of affairs! Perhaps with a bit of luck I'll drop in when it is "hopping", but with my luck, I'm not counting on it!

Jazz Venue: Tony's Jazz Lounge

This time I'll be taking a look at Tony's Jazz Lounge. I found it via a Second Life™ chapter of the Lounge Lizards in Exile event. It was a Friday edition of the 2 Martini Lunch I believe. I followed the teleport link provided by the group announcement.

Sidebar: If you're not a member of the Lounge Lizards in Exile, perhaps consider joining. There are usually two weekly events: 2 Martini Tuesdays and the 2 Martini Lunch on Friday. Just search for the group and join. It's free. Also consider joining the group for Tony's Jazz Lounge for weekly announcements about what's happening at the club. It's definitely not spammy like some groups can be.

The teleport link deposited me right at the front door. The club is contiguous with the Rivers of Venus gardens (more on that later) in the sky, so lag is not as much of an issue as some other places. I took the pictures when no one was around, but even when packed out I found the lag tolerable on my decrepit hardware.

To enter, one simply goes down the stairs. One comes to the bar first, but I'm going to skip that for now and go straight to the dance floor. The atmosphere is incredible. The place just oozes cool, even when its not busy. The blue cast is not from post processing, that's the way it really is. The normal music stream is the Martini In the Morning stream, however there are live events throughout the week of both music and stand up comedy.

While I was there, I ran into the very friendly proprietor, Absolut Smirnov. She is most helpful. Thank you Absolut for letting me run all over your club and take lots of pictures!

Now that I had a complete tour, it was time to head back to the bar. The bartender was quite skilled and could make an excellent Long Island Iced Tea. I better keep moving before they have to pour me out of here.

Upon exiting the club, one finds themselves in the midst of the Rivers of Venus gardens. The gardens are a great place to find a secluded spot with your sweetie or just enjoy the scenery.

A couple could make an entire, romantic evening out of dancing at Tony's Jazz Club and then lounging in Rivers of Venus.

Jazz Selections: 30's Jazz Clubs, Part 1 of 2

As I was relaxing to some music and cleaning up some entries in the other blog, I came across an old movie poster for "Casablanca". I would argue that this small but influential movie quite possibly defined exoticness and cool, during an era of global turmoil and upheaval.

Thinking this theme would be a good brief topic for Jazz clubs in SL, I popped in and began looking – and found a few… actually quite a few. As such, let me go over my finds and biased opinions…

Starting with the Café Casablanca. I had actually visited it a bit before, and was a bit disappointed with the outside appearance. However, the interior of this small club was quite nice, with a good dance floor, stage, and outside area.

The dress code is formal (no jeans), and smiled when I saw the advert for the "(practically) nightly song mimings of Miss BeeJay Ballinger". Many clubs have live entertainers, but I’m speculating that this is the first with (I’m assuming) a nightly torch singer – very nice.
I will have to make it a point to return and catch the lady’s performance!

Jazz Club Casablanca

A pleasant surprise to me, the Jazz Club Casablanca is located in a skybox, and is heavily influenced by North African architecture. Well-built, albeit with a bit, shall we say "spectacular" colors, this club, it has a good sized dance floor, and private niches for moments away from the dance floor.

The Jazz Club Casablanca uses a "Martini in the Morning" (MINM) feed, but alludes to having live music at times. I was unable to locate a schedule for performances, but if one desires a quick and smooth getaway, a visit here should do quite well.

I was on a run of good luck, but when I arrived at the Casablanca Society Lounge, I have to admit, I was a bit disappointed. It houses a large dance floor, but I was in the middle of a 80’s theme, a rave, or something along those lines. Not much Jazz (ok – none that I could ascertain), which was a let down, as the individuals there were quite nice.

For last, the largest 30’s era club, and possibly one of the largest in SL, Bogart’s. Essentially a sim that encompasses this entity, Bogart’s is an amazing place to enjoy Jazz. Though it uses a MITM feed, it has numerous qualities that set it apart from other clubs.

Perhaps the best quality is the ambiance. The build is spectacular (as can be seen from the dance floor photo), the hosts are quite friendly (and astute – even though I tried to sneak in a few times without their seeing me, I have always been greeted politely), the shopping area is extensive, and though it uses the old ani-balls for dancing, they suffice well enough.

The only complaint I have is one that affects any successful club, and is the nemesis of every av – lag. It can be chokingly slow at times, so if you do visit, I might recommend some off frame or just be prepared for some thick lag (at times).

Still, this is minor to the high quality build, active events, great hosts, and era-appropriate décor and atmosphere. It is one of the best 30’s era Jazz clubs, and most certainly one of the most popular Jazz clubs in SL – deservedly so!

Jazz Venues: Halfnote Jazz Club

Greetings! First, a small introduction. I am Bennett Smythe and I am a Second Life® jazz and blues fan. Rafael has very kindly invited me to share some of my impressions of SL jazz clubs that I visit. Thank you, Rafael, for allowing me to do this.

The Halfnote Jazz Club is the first jazz club that I ever visited in the Second Life® virtual world. It's the place where I was introduced to the wonderful SL jazz culture. I have returned many times since to just enjoy the ambiance and dance with my sweetheart. I found the place through search while looking for jazz clubs. The music the club plays is the Martini in the Morning stream. It's a great mix of vocal jazz and standards.

In all the times I have visited the club has never been packed out like some others can be. A busy evening seems to be one or two other couples. I think it would be fair to describe the place as "intimate". This is a place I like to bring new residents precisely because it is kind of mellow. It seems to give them space and time to figure things out and ask questions without a million other things going on around them.

The arrival placed me right at the entrance. One can walk through the red-curtain door to go inside or walk around the building to go straight to the dance floor. There don't seem to be any sort of greeter or club staff. At least, when I have visited, no one representing the club was there. It's pretty easy to find one's way around though.

Once inside there are some nice corners to just chill out and chat with a friend.

The dance floor is spacious. There seems to be ever changing sets of couples dances that are set out as I've never seen them configured the same way twice. Indeed, when I visited to take the pictures there was only one slow dance set out. I didn't try setting out my own, so I'm not sure if that would be an option or not. There is a singles dance ball that is usually suspended over the middle of the dance floor.

Of course, there are several quiet corners to hang out with a special friend. There are even cuddle animations in some of the couches. Just perfect for a quiet evening with that special someone.

A unique aspect of the Halfnote is the roof of the club. A quick jump up to the roof reveals another spot to chillax or to play some games.

Hey, where's that bartender? Must be a self-serve place. Just put it on my tab.

Jazz Selections: New Jazz Clubs I

Been giving consideration to the length and depth of the articles on Jazz After Midnight, and came to the decision that they may be a bit too long... and with the multitude of clubs in SL, perhaps allowing a reader to make their own judgement on them would be the best method of bring light to them. As such, I'll attempt to focus on the bring to light more clubs, and let the readers make their own opinions (of course, feel free to post said opinions about any clubs you may have visited)! I'll start with a few new clubs I've visited in SL...

Club Nouveau

A nicely designed venue, the Club Nouveau has a formal air to it, but is well built and looks to be a relaxing place to enjoy an evening with a partner, or just a good friend. Being a "skybox" type of build, the lag is less than many areas, allowing one to suffer less with jerky dances and odd movements.

A very new club (opened on the 9th of May), the Glass Slipper is a simple but elegant build, with an adjoining deck, and an associated merchant area just down the path (left to the dance floor, right to the stores upon arrival via tp). An events board is posted at the entrance, allowing a quick check of times for events at the Glass Slipper.

Rhapsody in Blue

Found Rhapsody quite by accident, but after visiting it a few times, I've been quite impressed with a it, for a number of reasons. First, it focus on Jazz and Blues specifically. Many larger venues need to add different genres of music to maintain profitability - but Rhapsody in Blue makes it a point of staying within the Jazz/Blues world.

Second, the owner, Mr. Dweedle Coronet, is an experienced venue owner, having transition to a smaller locale for personal reasons. Quite an amiable fellow, if you do come across him, he'll be most helpful with anything you might need.

Finally, Mr. Coronet has begun something that for some strange reason, very few club and lounge owners have done - started their own blog for their business. Aside from the Blue Fusion, I don't know of any other club (aside from these two), who make use of a blog to promote their investment. Jazz Venues: Jezebel's Jazz Club

During my travels for new places as of late, it seems as if I’m been stumbling upon tropical lounges – not that’s a bad thing, but a coincidence that I tp’ed upon Jezebel’s Jazz Club.

At first, one arrives in a bamboo hut, which has a usual notecard/landmark distributor. However, I grinned upon reading the note, as it explained the background of Jezabel’s…

Expansive floor - guess I arrived a bit too early (not even happy hour)!

Essentially, the original owners of Caribbean Breeze’s Jazz Club, Mr. Cooter Coorara & Ms. Jezebel Dunheved explained the growing success of the original club, and how RL began to intrude on their SL, so they sold it to new owners at the beginning of 2008.

However, Jezebel loved the small club on the Whanganui sim, so Cooter kept it, and renamed it after her. (Oddly enough, itunes just kicked in "The Look of Love" by Billy May – another coincidence, go figure). In the narrative, it states …

"Jezebel’s is a dedicated Jazz club and open to the public. We have no shopping mall, sploders, or any schlock to detract from your enjoyment. And of course there is the jazz. We play smooth, romantic jazz exclusively."

Can’t ask for more in a jazz club… and it is quite the club. The little hut will take you directly to the main dance floor, a cozy environment that has a number of traditional dance balls, and a piano, among other things. However, there are paths that’ll take you to other sections, like the waterfall, a beautiful sight of the water, or floating circles on the edge of the water, with a singe set of dance anis – for romantic moments.

The build is well done – the tropical theme, including foliage, the floor are all good. This club uses danceballs, but they are quite sufficient.

One of the pleasures of visiting the multitude of jazz clubs in SL is the opportunity to see the creativity involved with design and operation of relaxation areas. Many individuals who make their mark in SL take their goods and disappear into the ether. I’m glad that Mr. Coorara and Ms. Dunheved didn’t. Jezebel’s is a beautifully rendered and classically romantic Jazz lounge in SL – most certainly meriting a visit with that special someone.

Jazz Venues: September Rain

Last week, I had the good fortune to make the acquaintance of Mr. Julian2914 Hifeng, a superb SL Jazz guitarist, who among other things, recommended I join the group called "Jazz Enthusiasts". After doing so, I was pleasantly surprised with the suggestions bandied about regarding Jazz locations in SL. Following a lead from the group, I tp’ed to a locale, hoping to find a little spot to enjoy some good music. What I found, well, was like pulling a thread of string, so I kept pulling….

… and discovered the depth of September Rain, a tropical romantic sim (with an outdoor Jazz lounge)! Upon arrival, you’ll land on a patch of grass, which is a bit of a difference from the usual arrival points in most Jazz lounges in SL. It can be a bit disconcerting at first, but there is usually a hostess beside the announcement board, who will direct you to along the path to the right, which leads to the floating plateau that houses the dance area.

After taking the path (which includes crossing lily pads – if you fall off, you will take bit of a swim), you’ll arrive at the main floor. Spacious, well designed, and thematically textured, the main floor is a marvelous area to enjoy a dance, or listen to the musical feed (smoothjazz.com). The dance animation is via a menu interface through the floating balls over the floor, a method that seems gaining in popularity in many clubs and lounges.

There are many secluded areas where a couple can relax, dance, and listen to smooth jazz. Simply follow the lily pads, and you’ll be surprised at what you discover (even behind some waterfalls)!

The village has a number of stores, with less of a Jazz-esque feel (meaning more general products and merchants than in other locales). However, the September Rain Café has a unique means of, for lack of a better term, camping. Although one can stay as long as you might like, you will be prompted with questions to ensure you are awake (for more details about this, please visit the Café).

If you decide that you wish to spend a longer time at the September Rain sim, rental residences (the Honeymoon treehouses) are available for a nominal fee. They do have a privacy option (as I discovered to my consternation), so do avoid flying over them. The main board has menu options that allows one to visit unoccupied domiciles, so you can make a decision.

All in all, September Rain provides a change from the proto-typical Jazz club – an outdoor tropical venue, which is best shared with that someone special. For a change of pace or simply an enjoyable place to relax, I most certainly recommend September Rain to unwind from a stressful RL (or SL) day while listening to a bit of Jazz.

Jazz Venues: The Metronome and the Absolut Martini Bar

One of the nicer aspects of SL is the opportunity to see builds that pay homage to their RL equivalents. There are a few of what might be called "classic" jazz clubs, that harken back to the early days of Jazz… one of my favorites being Jazzers Paradise. I learned of it ages ago from my partner’s sister Jobe, and upon returning to the Metronome, I was quite happy to see that original sim had improved upon its original, and added more musical venues to accompany it.

When arriving at the Met, you’ll arrive between the Metronome entrance, and the Absolut Martini Bar (which was a new addition to me). I had to smile, as they represent two of my favorite eras of jazz. The Met’s enormous dance floor is built with a beautiful Art Deco influence, whereas the Martini bar has the intimacy of the Las Veags Lounge era.

To enter the Met, you’ll open its gilded doors, and follow the spiral staircase down to a subterranean dance floor, with a stage hosting its performer (with piano, DJ equipment, or what ever else might be needed). Jazzer the watchdog will probably lift an eye when you pass by, but a member of the staff will be quick to greet any newcomer to the establishment.

Style… well, depending on your locale: Art Deco for the Met, and a late 50’s or early 60’s Vegas lounge. Architecture, artwork, furniture, stage, even the bar maintains its stylish influences. Well built, solid construction values, and the style is a perfect fit for jazz – classic, be-bop, big band, lounge, or what ever might be playing.

The floor itself is huge, and there isn’t a problem with lag, which is a nice change from some of the other sims I’ve been visiting as of late! The Metronome has a dance menu that allows cycling through an option of dance (as opposed to dance anis), as does the Martini lounge.

The Absolut Martini bar is a smaller club, but has a lounge look and feel to it, with semi-circular booths, a small bar, and even a cigarette machine (before they was politically incorrect)! Wasn’t able to catch DJ Sasyblonde’s performance, but I will certainly have to do so in the near future.

A number of different genres of music are hosted in the sim, but as a Jazz enthusiast, my concern lays there. The Jazz events take place from Tuesday to Saturday, and include DJ Sasyblonde Hebert (at the Martini Bar) on Tuesdays, Live Jazz at the Golden Gate Garden Bandshell (an exterior local on the sim) on Saturdays, and in the Met itself, DJ Rrishanna on Wednesdays, and the ever smooth DJ Furion Paine on Thursdays.

Great Jazz, era-appropriate locales, and excellent performers make the Metronome and the Martini Lounge are fantastic destinations for a superb evening for a night of dancing, or just sipping a martini and listening to smooth music - it’ll make you feel as if you’ve taken that step back into yesteryear!

Jazz Venues: Bella Vida Velvet Jazz Lounge

The Bella Vida Velvet Jazz Lounge was a pleasant surprise when I came upon it a couple weeks ago. While pulling my ever-so-patient partner Artesia by the elbow to find new locales, I took the proverbial "shot in the dark" with SL search, and tp'd to Bella Vida, hoping to find a simple dance floor with some jazz that would be a pleasant background for the evening.

What I found has turned into one of the few Jazz lounges that I placed in my picks, and remains one of my favorites for a good number of reasons.

Arrival places one across a bridge to the central dance floor, flanked by welcome signs and a buffet table with a selection of beverages to indulge in prior to enjoying an evening of dancing. A note, however... the main dance floor is encircled by an extensive selection of stores with environmental appros items (e.g. formal dresses, tuxedos, ect...), so again, if you need to "polish your image" a bit (or a lot) prior to entering, the selection is available from many well-known merchants.

The greeters here are exceptional - they are polite and quick to greet you upon reaching the dance floor. You'll most likely be offered membership to the Bella Vida group, which can be a mixed blessing. They are very pro-active in promoting their activities, so if you do accept, expect to see a few notes from them regarding their promotions. Personally, I don't mind, as I like to keep abreast of their going-ons.

The dance floor uses a centralize system for dancing (the Intan Couple dance ball)... instead of the typical dance balls, one clicks on the colorful sphere hovering over the dance floor, and a pair of balls will materialize nearby, with the selector being able to choose from a menu of dances. Much easier to cycle through dances (better than having to be stuck on the same animation, regardless of the song!)

The build of the Bella Vida is reminiscent of classic Italian architecture, but has a modern and stylish appearance, including many small touches as a seating area next to an oval bar (reminds me of a San Fran cable car (lol)), and a runway for fashion events (I missed the one at the end of April due to RL circumstances, but I heard it was exceptional).

In addition to the many stores, there is a small restaurant on the other end of the sim, with outdoor tables and a replete selection of courses to indulge in with a friend.

One last item to mention... two of my favorite performers happen to be here. DJ Jen Noel, aka "The Dealer", is one of the few DJ in SL who makes a point of including Latin jazz and Tangos in her appearances, much to my appreciation. Additionally, DJ Furion Paine specializes in classic Jazz tunes, and certainly has a memorably narrative (and smooth) radio voice - his performances are good enough make you forget you're in SL. (His website is listed on the sidebar - do visit it!). Along with the talented DJ BabyJazz, they have a fantastic trifecta of performers here.

Needless to say, I certainly recommend Bella Vida. I have only scratched the surface of this locale. Many other hidden secrets (e.g. the lover's garden) are nestled away, so .... if you are looking for an outstanding Jazz Lounge to visit in SL, I would heartily recommend the Bella Vida Velvet Jazz Lounge.

Jazz Venue: The New Blue Note

When I was new to SL, I was fortunate enough to have a lady-friend introduce me to a great jazz lounge – it had memorable music, fantastic atmosphere, low lag… I never failed to enjoy my visits there. However, as my RL & SL diverted my attention, I paid fewer and fewer visits to this retro paradise, always meaning to return "at some later time". Last week ended up being that "later time", and to my surprise, not only was the New Blue Note still going strong, but was in fact better that I remembered.

When one tp’s to the New Blue Note, you’ll arrive just outside the entrance of the lounge. To the left are the lounge rules and a floral cart; to the right is the RFL kiosk and the Blue Note’s sign. [Before I continue, I should note that this lounge has been in operation for over two years – making it one of the oldest continually operating jazz lounges in SL.] Although there is no greeter or host per se, if Miss Naydee McGettigan (the Blue Note’s owner) happens to be in, she makes it a point of personally welcoming all guests who arrive.)

The style of the New Blue Note is, as its title states, retro, harkening to the classic days of the Rat Pack. The lounge and dance floor is open and easy to navigate and dancing uses the traditional dance-ball animations for its guests. Surrounding the floor are numerous tables in case one gets tired of dancing (lol), including what must be the "Blue Note Table", a unique area to relax and watch the couples dance the night away.

The floor plan is the same as I recalled from months ago, which is just as well, as it is smartly designed and built. The main stage has an (apparently) comfortable piano, and classic jazz microphone just in front. One nice touch is the announcement board just to its upper right, with id’s the songs that play through its online music feed (Martini in the Morning). No having to guess what songs are playing – a simple glance will do!

Additionally, She has a small bar area in the back corner of the dance floor, which is replete with modern re-imagining of the 60’s retro era by the southern California artist Shag. Images of classic Jazz artists surround the bar at one end, and a pair of suspended pod-chairs await at the other.

Miss McGettigan has, however, expanded the Blue Note’s holdings to include two additional areas. First, she has added a retail area, with a number of stores, including ones that sell appropriate attire for the lounge’s environs. Perhaps yet more intriguing, she has included numerous romantic hide-aways, where a couple can either dance in solitude, or have those simple conversations in private and enchanting surroundings.

As I mentioned previously, the New Blue Note has recently celebrated its two-year anniversary, with good reason. Superb dance floor design and layout, attention to the details of style of the 60’s lounge/Rat Pack era, secluded nooks for couples to steal a few moments away, and a plethora additional well-thought out aspects, place the New Blue Note as one of the best Jazz lounges of Second Life. A definite "must visit" – do so soon!

Jazz Venue: Barcelona Blues Bar

When conducting research for this article, I found the Barcelona Blues Bar, at what appeared to be a fantstic build with much potential. I originally envisioned a small venue with virtual smoke clouding the view as whispered Catalan and Spanish murmurmed while a live artist was performing.

However, my hopes were dashed as I continued to visit it over the follwing week.

Upon arrival, you'll land directly in the entrance of the club, which is good, as it is a skybox. No greeter, sans a bot offering me a tp link to a bookstore (?). Actually, during my visits (seven of them), I never saw a soul here, making the need for a host therefore academic. No guests = no need for a host, or even automatic greeter!

The build style is very sleek - practically modern. The build is well done, with a coherent style throughout the entire club. The spotlights are a nice touch, but it seems every visit was day visit, even after juggling my timeframes in rl to try to catch an evening period in SL. (I did shift to "midnight" in SL for the sake of seeing the spotlights, but rest assured, it was quite sunny).

There were two dance balls on the floor, gigantic as it was. The seating area was well laid out, and the bars on both floors are a nice touch.

But at least there is a nice view (during the persistant daytime)!

Unfortunately, as well built as the Barcelona Blues Bar is, I can't see much point in visiting. Even by its name, I expected something along the lines of Blues or Jazz, but a consistant rock music feed actually renders the bar's title academic. It has mounds of potential, but with no Jazz/Blues and no patrons, it will never reach the potential that it has.

Jazz Venue: Urbanity

I tend to dress a bit formally in SL, and as such I seek out stores that sell quality formal men’s attire. I happened upon Eros, and was looking at a couple of suits, when I noticed a TP panel that made mention of Jazz club on the premesis. Needless to say, I decided to pay it a visit – and discovered it was certainly worth my while…

When one arrives at Urbanity, you’ll be place literally at the entrance – quite nice, as you can make the proverbial bee-line to the dance floor if so desired. The times I have visited when a greeter was available, they were nice, but at other times, the notecards describing the ongoing events sufficed.

I’d say that the design of the build is reminiscent of Art Deco, with sleek lines and stylish additions to the lights and columns of the club. The dance floor is located in the center of the build, surrounded on three sides by a long bar, numerous seating areas, and a stage with piano and microphone, for live entertainment. Additionally, the same TP board is located on the corner between the seating area and the bar, just in case the desire to do a bit of shopping (at Eros huge shopping complex) strikes one’s fancy.

However, there are a set of freebee formals on the other end of the club. The men’s tux is quite well made, but I make no pretense on the lady’s dress – I will demure to my ignorance in arena of women’s fashion. Surrounding the club is a walkway, with romantic poseballs, in case a couple desires a little bit of quiet, away from the main gathering of patrons.

Another series of poseballs for dancing are used for couples, with a dance generator available if a person wishes to use it (for solo / separate dancing). The floor itself is quite large, and centrally situated in reference to the main stage. A common design, but it works well for the club.

I have to admit, I do visit sometimes, if only to listen to music and attend to SL business. The style and atmosphere of not only the club, but of the entire sim is quite good, making Urbanity a pleasure to visit, be it for events, contemplation, or relaxation.

I’m going to add a bit more structure to this blog (a bit more than my other one, the Heliograph), so I figured I’d try to explain how I’m doing what I’m doing here, and what my visits are about.

When I check out a place, I visit it a few times, when its busy and when its empty, to get an idea of how the place feels, and what the patrons of the lounge or club are like (e.g. friendly, snooty, quiet, ect…). One thing I don’t try to do is to judge the music. That’ll vary with the DJ or stream they are playing – as long as its Jazz, or a cousin of it, I’m fine with it. I hope to add some DJ interviews in the future, but for now, I’ll concentrate on the venues.

The first thing I blog about is how I arrived there. A lot of times its by search, but sometimes there is a story behind it – not every good place has to be found through search (ideally!) Next, I’ll discuss the arrival and the hosts. Some places will deposit you at the proverbial "front door" of a club, other will have you work through a gauntlet of obstacles before you can make it to the entrance. The hosts/greeters can make (or take away) from the all-important first impression. The majority of hosts are polite and courteous, but there are always a few exceptions. Not every place has live greeters, but if it does, and they stand out, I’ll try to give them the credit they deserve. If they aren’t so great, well… I’ll be polite in my description.

Style and build go hand-in-hand – if a build has a style that doesn’t match its stated theme or a general jazz theme, it’ll take away from the atmosphere. I’m talking extremes here – like a jazz lounge dressed up as a country bar or an S&M parlor (yes, I’ve seen both) doesn’t quite do it. I’ll try to provide some images so the readers can make up their own minds. If there is some unusual aspect, I’ll also point it out, in addition to stores, dining areas, bars, ect... The builds of most clubs are usually done by the prototypical "trained professionals", but if one is really well done or poorly done, I’ll make mention of it.

The all-important dance floor and animations are next – most places will use poseball anis, but if there is something unusual, I’ll try to point it out. Finally, I’ll mention of my impressions of the venue, good, bad, or in-between. I do realize that most club and lounge owners are hard-working individuals who have invested time, money, and more into their club, and I will do my best to respect their efforts. My goal is to promote the entire Second Life Jazz scene – bringing more attention to the great places that people can go to and relax from their RL (or SL, it its that stressful), even if for a while.

Enjoying the atmosphere at the Bella Vida Jazz Lounge

One of the most disappointing issues I have experienced in SL is where to take my partner for an enjoyable evening of dancing, or just listening to relaxing jazz music. Often times, I have resorted to sorting through a laundry list of jazz clubs and lounges in search, trying to find a place that has good music, well-designed, and is relatively lag-free (as much as SL can be).

Eventually, I'll find one that catches my eye, but often times, I end up at locales that have virtual tumbleweeds crossing it or a musical play list that claims jazz, but is actually an eclectic mix of various genres.

So I decided to start a small blog to categorize and highlight some of the better run SL jazz clubs – ones were you can enjoy good music with your sweetie, admire the quality and design of the build, and basically have a good jazz experience.

As with my other blog, if you have any comments or suggestions, please feel free to send them - I'm always interested in ways to make the "Jazz Scene" better - thanks!
